What Is a Smart Meter, and What Does It Actually Do?
A smart meter (also called an advanced metering infrastructure, or AMI, meter) automatically records and transmits your electricity usage in short intervals — often every 15 to 60 minutes — instead of requiring a technician to physically read the meter once a month. It doesn't change your rate by itself, but it's usually the technology that makes more detailed rate options, like time-of-use pricing, possible in the first place.
How it's different from a traditional meter
